Getting Your Mushroom Substrate Right

Most failed grows aren't failures of substrate choice. They're failures of substrate preparation. The material was fine; the moisture was off, or the pH drifted, or it was supplemented and then only pasteurized.

1. Moisture — the one that fails most often

Field capacity is the target. Squeeze a handful hard: a few drops should come out. A stream means too wet, nothing means too dry. Too wet and you get anaerobic pockets and bacterial contamination; too dry and the mycelium stalls and never recovers.

It's the hardest variable to hit consistently by hand, and it's why every substrate we ship arrives already at field capacity.

2. pH — quietly decides your yield

Most cultivated species want 6.0–7.5. Below that and competitors get an advantage; above it and mycelium slows. Gypsum and lime are how you buffer it, and buffering matters more than hitting a number once — pH drifts as mycelium metabolises.

3. Heat treatment — sterilise or pasteurise, not both, not either

This one catches people out because the answer depends entirely on the material.

Sterilise grain. Pressure, 250°F+, full kill including spores. Grain is nutritionally dense enough that anything surviving will outcompete your mycelium. All our grain bags and grain jars are pressure sterilized.

Pasteurise straw and manure. 160–180°F, partial kill. You want the surviving microbial community — it competitively suppresses the organisms you don't want. Sterilising straw makes it more vulnerable, not less, which surprises almost everyone the first time.

Supplemented hardwood must be sterilised, because the bran that lifts your yield also feeds contaminants.

4. Supplementation — yield and risk move together

Bran and other supplements raise biological efficiency and raise contamination risk by the same mechanism: more available nutrition. Supplement only if your sterilisation and sterile technique are already reliable.

Texture, porosity and gas exchange

Mycelium needs air. A substrate that's packed too densely goes anaerobic in the centre regardless of how good your moisture and pH are — you'll see colonisation stall in a ring and never close.
